Raytheon Raytheon Raytheon manufactures Tomahawk missiles, Stinger missiles (which have ended up in the hands of rogue states and terrorist groups) and Bunker Buster bombs. Raytheon also owns Hughes Aircraft and the defense division of Texas Instruments. A missile exploded at a Baghdad market on March 28, killing at least 62 Iraqis. The serial numbers on the remains of the missile were identified by journalist Robert Fisk and Traced back to Raytheon. The missile is thought to be either a Paveway laser-guided bomb or a Harm anti-radar missile. It was sold to the Navy. The London Independent reports that a sales description for Raytheon's Harm anti-radar missile declares: "Harm was designed with performance and quality in mind. In actual field usage, Harm now demonstrates reliability four times better than specification. No modern weapons arsenal is complete without Harm in its inventory." Raytheon had sales of $16.8 billion in 2002. Connections to the Bush administration include Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, who was once on Raytheon's board. Protests have been held at Raytheon plants across the U.S.: United Neighbors of Tucson has organized a citizen inspection team because of their concern that the company is manufacturing weapons of mass destruction at their Tucson plant. The Bread and Roses affinity groups has also held Death and Taxes Protests at Raytheon's Andover, MA plant. Californians have protested outside the Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems plant in El Segundo, CA. Anti-war protesters in Ireland occupied company offices in Derry on March 28. Hundreds of demonstrators turned in Wichita, Kansas out to protest Raytheon
Aircraft's decision to move hundreds of jobs out of the country. More
than 3,000 union-represented jobs will be moved to Mexico. The "Stand
for Wichita's Jobs" was held outside Raytheon's B-94 Complex. The
company, which is based in Lexington, KY, is reportedly cooperating with
an ongoing SEC investigation into accounting practices at its aircraft
unit. Last Updated April 3, 2003 |
