Anthony Mazzocchi

In recognition of his dedication to the working men and women of the world; his commitment to improving workplace safety; his advocacy of universal health care; his trenchant analyses of the future of labor; his promotion of cultural activities; his innovative approaches to educational programs for union members; and his quiet but deliberate building of institutions to serve those who toil.

Anthony Mazzocchi is a working class intellectual and renaissance man. He understands the global and local currents of our times and navigates both with a steady hand. He embraces the human spirit in its totality as he invites people to join in fighting for justice. He is a student of political history - yet his vision for the future is informed by, rather than limited by, past events.

He wins the hearts and minds of those he seeks to enlist with compelling principle and impeccable logic. His moral and political convictions are not tempered by expediency and his resolve is strengthened by the daunting obstacles to building a better society.

Anthony Mazzocchi was instrumental in the fight to create the Occupational Health and Safety Administration. He led the effort to highlight the plight of Karen Silkwood, a worker who blew the whistle on health and safety problems at a Kerr-McGee nuclear facility. He also exposed the forced sterilization of women working for the American Cyanamid corporation.

Whether he is recruiting members for the Labor Party, which is creating a movement by nurturing a new kind of political thinking to challenge establishment politics, or walking a picket line, he exudes genuine grace, charm and wit.

Anthony Mazzocchi works with humble, patient persistence for a more just and pleasant world. He brings people together and shows each how their common interests are greater than their individual differences. He is a working class hero.
